Mother to Daughter Advice

Me @ 17

Me: ugghhhh i will never wear tampons again. those things are painful. The nurse said I wouldn’t even feel it once it was in. After an hour I took it out, it hurt

Mom: did you take it out the cardboard?

Me: huhhhh

Mom: did you take it out the cardboard and just put the cotton piece in? you should have read the instructions. You just shoved everything up there

Me: How was I supposed to know. you didn’t tell me

Mom: you should have read the instructions and you had pads. You just wanted to be grown and go to the nurse for a tampon. Rolls her eyes

Me: Every time I try to tell you something you, forget it…stomps off

I was trying to be grown. all the girls in high school were wearing tampons I felt like a chump still wearing big old diaper pad, luckily that year the adhesive pads had come out. Yeah, remember the belt you had to wear…no, you probably don’t. Shit I’m old

Me @ 40

Me: Mia if you wear tampons make sure you take them out the cardboard

Mia: What cardboard? They come in a plastic tube.

Me: well make sure you take it out the tube before you insert it

Mia: Mommmmm I’m not stupid. who would be dumb enough to leave it in the tube

Me: I’m just saying…

Mia: but that’s just dumb.

Me: whatever I’m…forget it since you know everything. every time I try to tell you something…stomps off

She is NOT smarter than me!!!!

E ‘stato un po’

It’s been a bit. That is as close to ‘It’s been awhile’ I can get in Italian…

It has been awhile since I featured a foreign film on my blog and I saw a really heartwarming one a few nights ago.

Quiet Chaos (2008) via Netflix

Pietro Paladini is off enjoying the day at the beach with his brother when two women in the water cry out for help. His brother saves one and Pietro the other. The insane irony is when he returns home to find that his wife has fallen off a ladder and is dead in their garden.

Pietro is left to raise their daughter Claudia while dealing with her silent grief as well as his own. Dropping her off to school he tells her he will wait on the bench till she gets out, he decides to do this everyday. Pietro goes through is day working from his car oblivious to a big merger as he developes small relationships with the people surrounding his daughters school.

Low key with a few twists but very touching.

SN: Why doesn’t English sound as lyrical as other languages?

The Color Purple

I think it pisses God off when you walk by the colour purple in a field and don’t notice it. Shug Avery~The Color Purple

Purple is my favorite color and oddly so I can’t name three purple items of clothing in my closet. Go figure. My livingroom and diningroom however is this Benjamin Moore silver fox which is a light lavender color-my walls seem a bit darker than this silver fox

However, it has come to the time where I want to upgrade everything. Long winters do that to you, even if they are mild ones.

I. NEED. A. PURPLE. SOFA. IN. MY. LIFE.

In Search of Peace

Today I was one of the many who watched Whitney Houston’s funeral. It was beautiful and I cannot think of a more appropriate place to have her going home service than the church she grew up. Even though the church was filled with celebrities it still felt like a personal service for family and close friends. I thank the Houston family for allowing me to share in that wonderful service…in my own home.

I cried throughout as I listened to her friends, colleagues and family members relate their stories. Each speaker recalled the impact religion had on her life, it was all so touching. By the end I kept thinking for all her declarations of faith why was her heart and soul not at peace? All these years I’m sure she was praying and begging her Lord to give her peace but where was it? Why was she so lost?

I know the lost feeling she probably felt as she prayed, begging, for whatever it was she needed to make her soul whole. The loss we feel when, for whatever reason, we stray from the path we were born on, the path our parents guided us on as children, and the path we try to take root on as adults…but we can’t quite stay planted. I know that feeling and I know those prayers that brought me back to the path many times…as Whitney probably did. I did find solace. I never had to look for it in anything or anyone only myself. He gave me that.

It breaks my heart feeling like she didn’t find it. It seemed till the end she was still searching. Maybe her Lord answered her prayers, maybe there was more she had to do on her own to get the solace she sought. Maybe, maybe, maybe…

The Godfathers

Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in. Michael Corleone

See how old and beat he is in this pic? This is how I look when I dive into my passion of politics. It’s a guilty pleasure before I even roll out the bed to check the Huff Post, Crooks and Liars, Chuck Todd tweets etc. It’s ridiculous. I need help. I really do. I can read the same story in at least ten outlets about the new Mitt back pedal, the new racist remark Newt pulled out of his ass, or how Santorum wants me to not run to Planned Parenthood after a rape for the morning after pill. That is just reading the political stuff. I can waste a whole night watching pundit after pundit speak on the same stories all the while checking my iPhone for tweets and updates and cursing. Oh, the cursing…Bad ShaSha

Newt giving me the finger should be enough to make me stop indulging in this self-destructive behavior.

The severely conservative Mitt. I mean this guy is severely severe stern conservative. He hates anything moderate but only if you mention it. He does excellent backflips…Olympic gold medal flips

Santorum 1. The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. 2. Senator Rick Santorum. I. CAN’T. STOP. LAUGHING.

Around the Way Girl-Whitney

I think its the only thing I’ve discovered about getting older that I really dislike…seeing people I love die and I’m not even old.

I was very sad to hear the news about Whitney. She was labled the girl next door by the media when she came out and she was but…she was really the girl around the way.

I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings, at least two pair
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude
That’s all I need to get me in a good mood
She can walk with her switch and talk with street slang
I love when I woman ain’t afraid to do her thang
Standin’ at the bus stop, suckin’ on a lollipop
When she gets pumpin’, it’s hard to make the hotty stop
She likes to dance to the rap jam
She’s sweet as brown sugar with candied yams
Honey-coated complexion
Music camay
Let’s hear it for the girl
She’s from around the way

I can’t describe her any better than the way than LL described us back in the day. I thought it was a tribute to us then and I still do to this day. I love our black girl swagger and I will miss Whitney’s. I will definitely miss Whitney’s.

never achieved this hair though :(

I used to style my hair like hers and dress like her. I thought she was stunning and her voice simply made me envious that she got it all and my vocal cords just suck!

Two of my favorite looks of hers . Yes, I cried.

Perm in your hair, or even a curly weave
With your New Edition/Bobby Brown button on your sleeve
I tell you come here
You say meet me half way
‘Cause brothers been poppin’ that yang all day
Around the way, you’re like neighborhood jewel
All the homeboys sweat ya, so you’re crazy cool
Wear your gold in the summer with your biking shorts
While your watchin’ all the brothers on the basketball court
Goin’ to the movies with your homegirl’s crew
While the businessmen in suits be hawkin’ you
Baby hair pumpin’, lip gloss a-shinin’
I think you’re in the mood for whinin’ and dinin’
So we can go out and eat somewhere
We got a lot of private jokes to share
Lisa, Angela, Pamela, Renee
I love you, you’re from around the way
